Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
