British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
