We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
