Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
